On Sunday, for the first time in over a decade, Paris revived a tradition: an annual race of cafe and restaurant waiters. About 200 men and women swerved, jostled and jogged 1.2 miles through the city streets, which were lined with cheering crowds. The race, which was first held in the early 20th century, had been on hiatus since 2012 because of a lack of funding. But Paris officials saw an opportunity for the city to shine before hosting the Summer Olympics, which kick off in July. It was also a moment to illustrate that sipping coffee at a cafe or wine in a bistro was as integral to the capital’s cultural heritage as its most famous landmarks.

Richard Lewis and Larry David, Best Frenemies Forever

If ever a Hollywood friendship was destined to be, it might have been the one between the comics Larry David and Richard Lewis, who died from a heart attack on Tuesday at 76. That would set the tone that would define their friendship — and their onscreen relationship — for the rest of their lives. “I disliked him intensely,” Lewis told The Spectator last year, calling the young David cocky and arrogant. “We became instant best friends,” David said of Lewis during that 2002 interview, at the Paley Center for Media. In 2010, talking with Howard Stern, Lewis said, “When I became a comic, he loved my work, and I loved his work.”

Wade also testified that Willis paid cash for excursions on at least one vacation and paid him back for plane flights and other travel. “When I travel I always pay cash,” Willis said of the trips with Wade, saying that she paid Wade back for certain transportation and excursions during the travel. “I like Grey Goose.”Explaining why there were no receipts for Willis’ reimbursements and other payments, Wade said he wasn’t keeping a ledger of what he paid for versus what Willis paid for.

An Israeli soccer player was briefly detained by the Turkish authorities and suspended by his club after he displayed a message of support for Israel during a game on Sunday. The player, Sagiv Jehezkel, a 28-year-old wing for the top-division club Antalyaspor, flashed the message after he scored the tying goal in a match. To celebrate, Mr. Jehezkel jogged to the corner of the field, where photographers were positioned, and pointed to a message on a band of tape on his left wrist. Mr. Jehezkel, in his statement to prosecutors, said his message was a call for the war to end, according to Turkish news media. On Sunday, the president of Antalyaspor, Sinan Boztepe, said the club’s board had suspended Mr. Jehezkel from the team.

When a group of international journalists arrived at the southern fringe of Gaza City early Friday morning, riding in the back of an Israeli army jeep, we struggled to orientate ourselves amid the ruins, the wreckage and the darkness. House after house was missing a wall or a roof, or both. Many had simply been flattened, their concrete floors lying atop each other like a pack of playing cards. Trying to situate myself after reaching Gaza City, I asked a senior Israeli commander where we were in relation to a fishing port where I usually stayed during visits to Gaza before the war. I could not find the fish market.

"You've just dropped the World Cup," were the words attributed to Waugh after Gibbs's drop, though neither player has ever corroborated the remark. TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Eyewitness testimony Tuesday in the continuing trial three police officers, who are white and Asian American, charged with the 2020 death of Manuel Ellis, a Black man, starkly contradicted the picture the officers’ lawyers painted. The Pierce County Medical Examiner ruled the March 3, 2020, death of Ellis, 33, a homicide caused by lack of oxygen during physical restraint. Collins told Pierce County sheriff’s detectives that Ellis had attacked him by hurling him through the air to land on his back. Burbank was almost instantly on top of Ellis and swung up to three times to punch Ellis, according to Lowery. As Lowery left the scene, he said it appeared the officers had apprehended Ellis and were in control of him.

BUDAPEST, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Australian Peter Bol endured an anti-climatic appearance at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday as, having had a doping suspension lifted only weeks before the event, he looked well off the pace in the 800m heats and failed to progress. Bol, fourth at the Tokyo Olympics and the Commonwealth Games silver medallist last year, was provisionally suspended in January after testing positive for synthetic erythropoietin (EPO). However, in an unusual development, an "atypical finding" was discovered in his B sample leading to the ban being lifted in February. However, the case dragged on until the start of August when he was finally cleared by Sport Integrity Australia.
